Zombie Drabble #162 “Coming Out”

“Mom.”

He hadn’t said it very loud, and with the windows down, she might not have heard him.

“Mom.”

“I’m right here, Alley, what is it?”

“I’m gay.” She was silent. The highway stretched out before them. He changed lanes a couple times to avoid abandoned cars or trucks. “Did you hear me?”

“Yes, dear.”

“Aren’t you going to say something?”

“What should I say? I don’t really think it matters anymore.”

“You… why not?”

“Well… before, I might have worried about what the ladies at church would say. But I’m sure they’re all dead now.”

Alley laughed. “Thanks, mom.”
