It sat on the sand next to him, without speaking. Chuck was almost unbearably curious, but it was rude, so he kept his eyes on the surf.
After a long while the thing spoke. “I have never seen so much water in one place.”
Chuck turned and said, “The Pacific Ocean? Yeah, it’s pretty big.”
“I have an irrational urge to dive into it.”
“Why irrational?”
“I am far too dense: I would sink to the bottom and drown.”
“It’s not that deep at the edge. Plus, there’s a lifeguard watching. Go on. You’ll never forgive yourself if you don’t.”
